Match cut
Match cutting is when a shot is cut together with another shot of a similar idea. A famous example is from Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey. Early in the film a Gorilla throws a bone in the air, for it to come down and cut to a shot of a space ship of a similar structure to the bone, hurtling in outer space.
We use match cuts to bring continuity into action.
