Arrival
2016's Arrival. A marvelled film directed by Denis Villeneuve. The film is not linear. I love this (full stop).
When the decision came across to edit the film in this way, they struck gold. We open the film to see Amy Adam's character suffer after the loss of her child- wait. No. The film plays with your mind. It opens with the ending. The character's suffering as she arrives at work, carries out her duties as a professor at a University, isn't grief; but is a lack of self purpose. She hasn't lost a child- yet. But having that scene after makes us think the emotion on her face is something it is indeed not.
Having a film with a non-linear structure really excites me, before I saw Arrival. I wrote Hand In Hand. A short film surrounding the life of a misunderstood teenager who wakes up with a severed arm attached to him on a handcuff. The film follows it's structure from Z to A to J to B to C to Z. Which sounds really confusing, it's the only way I can describe it. I got inspiration to do it in such a way from Pulp Fiction of which I really admire the way it is written/directed and edited.
It bothers people when they're cheated out of something though , I think. I've met people who didn't enjoy this style of editing. To each to their own.
